The standard steel sensor electronics can be upgraded with a slag surface detection unit. This together with a splash-free temperature probe, new software and additional hardware makes it possible to measure the slag thickness. Beside the slag thickness, a normal readout of the temperature is obtained.
Operating principle The temperature lance with the splash-free temperature probe starts to go down. When the probe tip hits the top of the slag, a signal is sent from the slag surface detection unit to the computer. This signal starts the counting of the distance the lance travels. |

The lance travels further into the melt and when the part of the lance tip where the sensor is located passes the slag/metal interface, a signal is sent to the computer which stops the counting of the distance. The computer can immediately calculate the slag thickness and present it for the process system. Repetitive accuracy 10mm or better. |
